Hello All! I just wanted to remind all of you that this weekend is Memorial Day. While you are enjoying this fun weekend with a day off away from work. Let's remember to take a moment and honor those who have served and died for our country, so that we have the privilege to wake up everyday in freedom! Now for a little history, because the teacher in me has to share ;) .
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. Many cities claim their state and city to be the actual birthplace of Memorial Day. There is evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War to honor those who died in battle. In 1867 a hymn was published called "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet. It was a dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" according ti Duke University.
Waterloo New York was officially declared to be the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966. I believe that many Americans have forgotten the true meaning of Memorial Day. In many cemeteries the graves of the fallen are completely ignored. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day.
This Memorial Day please remember to wave our wonderful countries Flag and be proud!!!
